Prime Time is precarious and at any time the top shows can be cruelly yanked from glory by an audience's hand (or euthanized by their own creators). These series all had their moment in the sun, and now serve as milestones of Prime Time's past.

How It Works

  • Anyone, anywhere submits a pilot that is five minutes or less, on a miniDV tape or DVD.
  • The creators of the prime time shows watch all submissions.
  • They pick the best ones to be screened.
  • At the screening, a live audience watches the new pilots and new episodes of the prime time shows.
  • The audience votes. Top 5 shows become the new prime time lineup.
  • Repeat.

Lab Partners

created by Karen Lurie, Nick Poppy
Lab Partners paired a put-upon man of science with the former star of a science fiction tv series, a charming odd-coupling that found a home in prime time for only one month.

Vamps

created by Greg Stees
Aldous Davidson, Greg Stees and Al Thompson brought some high production value to their show about New York roommate vampires, but lost their slot in a month that saw three pilots make prime time.

Roommates

After years of unprecedented screening dominance - a run which included a stint with overlapping prime time shows - The Big Honkin' crew left prime time quietly in April '09, declining to make a fourth episode of their show about a couple of guys who live with an internet search engine. One couldn't blame them for wanting a well-deserved break (but we still hope they'll be back soon).

The Rory & Craig Show

Yet another take on the evergreen two-guys-in-an-apartment show, this time from the folks who brought us last year's Beyond Fact. Despite a charming format combining live-action and animation, Rory & Craig fell by the wayside in March.

Cooking With the Single Guy

created by Daniel Kramer
At 101ny's special New York Television Festival screening, Daniel Kramer and Matt Saccullo smashed into prime time. After just three servings, however, they bowed out voluntarily at the February screening.

Scissor Cop

The show about a cop who won't let go of his scissors, told largely in lengthy flashback sequences that continually add to the show's rich backstory. The secret of the scissors was finally revealed at the February screening, as Westphal, Silvestro and Prine moved on to other projects.

The Defenders of Stan

Super-powered heroes unite to defend humanity - in this case, one guy. "Defenders of Stan" called it a series in February, self-canceling after a record-setting 20 episodes.

Me and My Cat

Screening vets Jess Lane and Ed Mundy team up with a show that's a little like Mister Wizard, if Mister Wizard was a precocious little girl with a gigantic cat and a harried mother. A three vote difference left them out of the Prime Time lineup in November.

Last screened: 2008-11-03 at Pianos

Mister Glasses

created by Mitch Magee
Gorgeous black and white photography, a character obsessed with modernist architecture...what's not to like? Mister Glasses left Prime Time without firing a shot in November, leaving behind a moody, AMC-like 8-episode run.

Majestic Dragon

This Victor Vazquez/Jordan Fish collaboration - long known for its distinctive animation and voice work (and infectious theme song) - suffered cancellation at the hands of 101ny's New York TV Festival audience, but will remain a highlight of the '08 season.

The Outer Boroughs

created by Eugene Lehnert
The show about strange goings-on on New York's periphery couldn't hang on to its Prime Time slot in a month that saw several surprising results, but hopefully Lehnert, Holmes and company will be back with a new pilot shortly.

Trillions

Trillions, the soap opera about ultra rich globe trekkers, fell one vote short of Prime Time with its second offering.

Mopper's Closet

created by Ken Kocses
In May's screening, the audience put Ken Kocses, Christie Brown and company back in the closet. Hopefully they'll bust out with more of their handiwork in July.

Beyond Fact

First time submitters Damian Chadwick, Rory Panagotopulos, Craig Rowin and co. crashed prime time with this mock doc about conspiracy theories and the theorists that love them, but the audience didn't show quite enough love for episode 2. Corporate sponsorship backlash, or coordinated electioneering campaign? We smell a conspiracy!

Police Procedures: NYC Casting

PP: NYCC, the show that, well, explored the casting dilemmas of a CSI-style drama, turned in perhaps their best effort yet in March '08, then followed up with a successful bid for self-cancellation. Good luck with the NY Television Festival, fellas.
